The holidays can feel like the worst time to start solids… but they can actually be one of the best. Big meals, busy schedules, and lots of opinions don’t have to derail your BLW journey.
With a few simple strategies, you can keep your baby safe, included, and happily exploring food all season long.
One of the biggest challenges for parents this time of year is family pressure. Everyone has an opinion, and someone always wants to offer “just a little bite of pie.”
Remember, your baby isn’t missing out. They don’t need sugar or holiday treats to feel included. You can hold warm, firm boundaries like, “We’re keeping things baby-safe today,” without needing to explain yourself.
Holiday meals are full of choking hazards, but there are plenty of baby-safe options too. Think mashed potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, soft veggies, turkey strips, soft rolls, and ripe fruit.
Stick to the same safety rules you use any other day. If it’s not BLW-safe on a Tuesday, it’s not safe on Thanksgiving.
If you’re traveling, keep it simple. Bring two or three familiar foods, a bib, a suction plate, and your confidence. If baby skips a meal because of travel or naps, that’s okay. Milk is still their main nutrition during the first year.
Most importantly, remember that holidays are about connection. Your baby doesn’t need to eat a full meal to be part of the experience. Sitting at the table, exploring textures, watching you eat, and being included is where the magic happens.
